La città è uno dei comuni della Bisiacaria ed è situata fra il Carso e l'Adriatico, a breve distanza dalla città di Monfalcone, con la quale forma un'unica agglomerazione urbana. Il clima della città è di tipo subcontinentale, con inverni freddi ma non rigidi, ed estati non eccessivamente calde, temperate dalla vicinanza del mare. Nel semestre freddo risultano predominanti i venti nord-orientali dove la bora la fa da padrona anche se alternata a flussi sciroccali, mentre nel semestre caldo si fanno sentire le brezze umide dal mare Adriatico!
